Its lowercase sits low: the x-height is 72.3% of the cap height, where the median for display fonts is 76.2%, lower than 74 of the 97 other display fonts. Ascenders on b, d, h, k and l line up with the capitals (100% of their height), and descenders on g, j, p, q and y drop 27.9% of the cap height below the baseline, deeper than 81 of the 97 other display fonts. Its letters are of average width for display fonts: an average lowercase letter, spacing included, is 90% as wide as the capitals are tall (an average capital, 99.4%), within 0.7% of the median. The o is close to a circle, 1.11 times as wide as it is tall, and W is the widest capital, at 1.08 times the width of H. The O rises 1.1% of the cap height above H and sits on the baseline.

Ink covers 17.6% of each lowercase letter's box (its advance width by the cap height), lighter than 90 of the 97 other display fonts. The letters are hollow: every stroke is drawn as a thin outline band.

Its 501 characters include 105 Latin, 73 Thai, 69 Greek, 67 Devanagari, 66 Cyrillic, 36 Arabic and 27 Hebrew letters, plus 58 figures, punctuation marks and symbols; 53 of the Latin letters are accented or special forms beyond A to Z. The word space measures 34.9% of the cap height, and the blank space either side of a lowercase letter takes up 7.3% of its width. Spacing is adjusted with 267 kerning pairs, more than 89 of the 97 other display fonts. The tightest of them is VA, which closes up by 29.2% of the cap height. Its OpenType tables also hold Arabic joining forms (init, medi, fina), Devanagari conjuncts and vowel signs (half, rphf, blwf and more), mark positioning for accents and vowel signs (mark, mkmk), ligatures (liga, dlig) and glyph composition (ccmp, locl). The figures have different widths, so columns of numbers set in Gazette Outline will not line up exactly.

13 other library fonts share Gazette Outline's underlying letter structure. Compared with Gazette Outline, Atelier Wide keeps the letters plain, without the outline effect, sets 9% wider and puts down 35% more ink. Scholar Roman keeps the letters plain, without the outline effect, sets 7% narrower and puts down 48% more ink. Boutique Serif keeps the letters plain, without the outline effect, puts down 31% more ink and has a 68% x-height.
