Which font format do you need?

TTF and OTF are the files you install on a computer to type in Word, Google Docs, Canva or design apps. TTF holds TrueType outlines and OTF usually holds OpenType (CFF) outlines; both work on Windows and macOS. WOFF and WOFF2 are the same fonts packed for websites: WOFF2 is the smallest, about 30 per cent smaller than WOFF, and every current browser reads it.

This converter changes the package, not the letters. A WOFF2 made from a TTF unpacks to a TTF, and one made from an OTF unpacks to an OTF, because the outlines inside stay exactly as they were. Converting TrueType outlines into CFF, or back, redraws every curve and is not done here.

Only convert fonts you are allowed to: many licences forbid changing a font’s format for web use without a web licence. Fonts from the FontGenerator library and fonts you make here come in all four formats already, so you rarely need a converter for them.

Questions

Is my font uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is read and converted by your browser, and nothing is sent to our servers. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded.
Why can’t I turn an OTF into a TTF?
OTF and TTF usually hold different kinds of outlines (CFF curves and TrueType curves). Changing one into the other redraws every glyph and can change how the font looks, so this tool keeps the outlines as they are. Most apps accept either.
Which format should I use on my website?
WOFF2. Every current browser supports it and it is the smallest. Add WOFF only if you must support browsers from before 2016.
Does converting change the font’s quality?
No. WOFF and WOFF2 compress the font without losing anything, and unpacking gives back the same outlines, spacing, kerning and names.
