About
About Letterman Varsity
Its lowercase is tall: the x-height is 80.9% of the cap height, against a median of 74.8% for display fonts, taller than 99 of the 111 other display fonts. Ascenders on b, d, h, k and l rise 3.2% above the capitals, and descenders on g, j, p, q and y drop 22.5% of the cap height below the baseline, shallower than 78 of the 111 other display fonts. Letterman Varsity runs 8.3% wider than the median for display fonts: an average lowercase letter, spacing included, is 94.8% as wide as the capitals are tall (an average capital, 105.3%). The o is close to a circle, 1.10 times as wide as it is tall, and W is the widest capital, at 1.30 times the width of H. Round letters overshoot: O rises 1% of the cap height above H and dips 1% below the baseline.
Ink covers 44.4% of each lowercase letter's box (its advance width by the cap height), darker than 67 of the 111 other display fonts. Each solid letter is ringed by an outline with a clear gap between them, as on college lettering.
Its 148 characters include 105 Latin letters, plus 43 figures, punctuation marks and symbols; 53 of the Latin letters are accented or special forms beyond A to Z. The word space measures 32.6% of the cap height, and the blank space either side of a lowercase letter takes up 7.5% of its width. Spacing is adjusted with 231 kerning pairs, more than 97 of the 111 other display fonts. The tightest of them is VA, which closes up by 27.9% of the cap height. The figures have different widths, so columns of numbers set in Letterman Varsity will not line up exactly.
11 other library fonts share Letterman Varsity's underlying letter structure. Compared with Letterman Varsity, Sheriff Shadow adds a separate drop shadow and sets 14% narrower. Slime Slab adds paint drips. Quarry Slab keeps the letters plain, without the varsity effect, sets 6% narrower and puts down 21% less ink.
Measured from the version 0.1.0 font file. Comparisons are with the 368 library fonts measured on October 3, 2026, 112 of them display fonts.
