Its x-height is 74.6% of the cap height, near the 74.5% typical of decorative fonts in the library, taller than 18 of the 35 other decorative fonts. Ascenders on b, d, h, k and l line up with the capitals (100% of their height), and descenders on g, j, p, q and y drop 13.2% of the cap height below the baseline, shallower than 34 of the 35 other decorative fonts. Its letters are of average width for decorative fonts: an average lowercase letter, spacing included, is 77.3% as wide as the capitals are tall (an average capital, 86%), within 1.4% of the median. The o is an upright oval, 0.89 times as wide as it is tall, and W is the widest capital, at 1.08 times the width of H. Round letters overshoot: O rises 0.9% of the cap height above H and dips 2.1% below the baseline.

The letters stand upright, with no measurable slant. Vertical stems measure 15.4% of the cap height, lighter than 12 of the 22 other decorative fonts. Ink covers 35.9% of each lowercase letter's box (its advance width by the cap height), lighter than 18 of the 35 other decorative fonts. The tops and bottoms of o and O are slightly heavier than their sides, 1.20 to 1. Paint drips hang from the undersides of the strokes.

Its 501 characters include 105 Latin, 73 Thai, 69 Greek, 67 Devanagari, 66 Cyrillic, 36 Arabic and 27 Hebrew letters, plus 58 figures, punctuation marks and symbols; 53 of the Latin letters are accented or special forms beyond A to Z. The word space measures 31.5% of the cap height, and the blank space either side of a lowercase letter takes up 7% of its width. Spacing is adjusted with 268 kerning pairs, more than 29 of the 35 other decorative fonts. The tightest of them is VA, which closes up by 25.4% of the cap height. Its OpenType tables also hold Arabic joining forms (init, medi, fina), Devanagari conjuncts and vowel signs (half, rphf, blwf and more), mark positioning for accents and vowel signs (mark, mkmk), ligatures (liga, dlig) and glyph composition (ccmp, locl). The figures have different widths, so columns of numbers set in Vampire Serif will not line up exactly.

Vampire Serif is drawn on the same letter structure as 13 other fonts in the library. Compared with Vampire Serif, Tuscan Roman adds Tuscan spurs and puts down 19% more ink. Boutique Serif keeps the letters plain, without the drip effect, sets 16% wider and puts down 36% less ink. Atelier Wide keeps the letters plain, without the drip effect, sets 27% wider and puts down 34% less ink.
