About
About Atelier Light
Its lowercase sits low: the x-height is 60.5% of the cap height, where the median for serif fonts is 69.6%, lower than 38 of the 39 other serif fonts. Ascenders on b, d, h, k and l line up with the capitals (100% of their height), and descenders on g, j, p, q and y drop 33.3% of the cap height below the baseline, the deepest of all 40 serif fonts. Atelier Light runs 5.1% narrower than the median for serif fonts: an average lowercase letter, spacing included, is 81.5% as wide as the capitals are tall (an average capital, 91.6%). The o is wider than it is tall, 1.15 to 1, and W is the widest capital, at 1.09 times the width of H. Round letters overshoot: O rises 1.2% of the cap height above H and dips 0.4% below the baseline.
The letters stand upright, with no measurable slant. Vertical stems measure 11.9% of the cap height, lighter than 28 of the 35 other serif fonts. Ink covers 19.9% of each lowercase letter's box (its advance width by the cap height), the lightest of all 40 serif fonts. Strokes change thickness with direction: the sides of o and O are 8.2 times as thick as their tops and bottoms.
Its 148 characters include 105 Latin letters, plus 43 figures, punctuation marks and symbols; 53 of the Latin letters are accented or special forms beyond A to Z. The word space measures 34.5% of the cap height, and the blank space either side of a lowercase letter takes up 6.4% of its width. Spacing is adjusted with 47 kerning pairs, fewer than 25 of the 39 other serif fonts. The tightest of them is AY, which closes up by 14.3% of the cap height. The figures have different widths, so columns of numbers set in Atelier Light will not line up exactly.
13 other library fonts share Atelier Light's underlying letter structure. Compared with Atelier Light, Lore Serif puts down 38% more ink and has a 69% x-height. Saga Serif sets 15% wider, puts down 59% more ink and has a 70% x-height. Boutique Serif sets 10% wider, puts down 16% more ink and has a 68% x-height.
Measured from the version 0.1.0 font file. Comparisons are with the 314 library fonts measured on October 2, 2026, 40 of them serif fonts.
