About
About Saddle Joint Serif
The x-height is a compact 67.4% of the cap height, below the 71.2% median for serif fonts, lower than 64 of the 73 other serif fonts. Ascenders on b, d, h, k and l rise 6.6% above the capitals, and descenders on g, j, p, q and y drop 30.5% of the cap height below the baseline, deeper than 51 of the 73 other serif fonts. Its letters are of average width for serif fonts: an average lowercase letter, spacing included, is 80.4% as wide as the capitals are tall (an average capital, 95.8%), within 3.4% of the median. The o is close to a circle, 1.07 times as wide as it is tall, and M is the widest capital, at 1.10 times the width of H. Round letters overshoot: O rises 2% of the cap height above H and dips 1.1% below the baseline.
The letters stand upright, with no measurable slant. Vertical stems measure 20.5% of the cap height, heavier than 38 of the 48 other serif fonts. Ink covers 33.2% of each lowercase letter's box (its advance width by the cap height), darker than 37 of the 73 other serif fonts. Strokes change thickness with direction: the sides of o and O are 3.2 times as thick as their tops and bottoms.
Its 148 characters include 105 Latin letters, plus 43 figures, punctuation marks and symbols; 53 of the Latin letters are accented or special forms beyond A to Z. The word space measures 46% of the cap height, and the blank space either side of a lowercase letter takes up 12.7% of its width. The font carries no kerning, so spacing comes from each letter’s own side bearings. The figures have different widths, so columns of numbers set in Saddle Joint Serif will not line up exactly.
Saddle Joint Serif is drawn on the same letter structure as one other font in the library. Compared with Saddle Joint Serif, Saddle Joint Serif Outline puts down 47% less ink.
Measured from the version 0.1.0 font file. Comparisons are with the 469 library fonts measured on October 10, 2026, 74 of them serif fonts.

- Structure
- Upright medium-width solid serif built from a repeated saddle joint wherever a horizontal member meets a vertical stem. Each join narrows through a short centered straight neck, then flares symmetrically into two low diagonal shoulders before entering the full horizontal serif or crossbar; the top and bottom serifs, H/E/F/L/T arms, A crossbar, and B/P/R arm joins all use this same neck-and-two-shoulder saddle. The saddle is a connected construction carried through uppercase, lowercase, figures and punctuation, while bowls remain ordinary continuous closed forms and serifs remain solid horizontal members. It is not a bracket-radius change, a one-sided buttress, a cove recess, a keystone crown, a notch, chamfer, terminal-only effect, width/weight change, outline, shadow, stripe or detached decoration. O, o and D each keep one uninterrupted white counter. A has a clear apex and crossbar; a is double-storey; e is open; k has a normal fork; N has a full diagonal; g has a true descender; 1 keeps a clear flag
