How to set out a monogram

A classic three-letter monogram puts the surname initial in the middle, larger than the others: first name on the left, surname in the middle, middle name on the right. Jane Mary Smith becomes J S M with a large S. A couple’s wedding monogram often uses the two first initials either side of the shared surname initial.

Script fonts give the traditional, engraved look of stationery and linen; serif fonts read as formal and architectural; decorative fonts suit logos and labels. A frame ties the letters together: a double circle for invitations and wax seals, a diamond for badges and embroidery.

Questions

What order should the letters of a monogram be in?
For one person: first, LAST, middle, with the surname initial larger in the middle. When all letters are the same size, use the natural order: first, middle, last.
Can I use my monogram commercially?
Yes. The PNG you download may be used for anything, from wedding stationery to product labels. The font file is licensed separately if you want to type with it.
Can I get a vector file?
The generator downloads a 1200 × 1200 PNG, enough for print at about 10 cm. For a vector version, trace the PNG with the free Image to SVG tool, or download the font and set the letters in a design app.
