About
About Timber Slab
With an x-height of 74.5% of the cap height, its lowercase stands above the 69.6% median for serif fonts, taller than 32 of the 39 other serif fonts. Ascenders on b, d, h, k and l line up with the capitals (100% of their height), and descenders on g, j, p, q and y drop 28.9% of the cap height below the baseline, shallower than 20 of the 39 other serif fonts. It sets narrow: an average lowercase letter, spacing included, is 70% as wide as the capitals are tall (an average capital, 82.7%), 18.5% less than the median for serif fonts, so more words fit on a line. The o is an upright oval, 0.88 times as wide as it is tall, and W is the widest capital, at 1.20 times the width of H. Round letters overshoot: O rises 3% of the cap height above H and dips 1.6% below the baseline.
The letters stand upright, with no measurable slant. Vertical stems measure 15.5% of the cap height, heavier than 18 of the 35 other serif fonts. Ink covers 43.3% of each lowercase letter's box (its advance width by the cap height), darker than 32 of the 39 other serif fonts. Strokes keep one thickness in every direction: the sides of o and O measure the same as their tops and bottoms.
Its 148 characters include 105 Latin letters, plus 43 figures, punctuation marks and symbols; 53 of the Latin letters are accented or special forms beyond A to Z. The word space measures 29.6% of the cap height, and the blank space either side of a lowercase letter takes up 10.1% of its width. Spacing is adjusted with 262 kerning pairs, more than 29 of the 39 other serif fonts. The tightest of them is AY, which closes up by 25.3% of the cap height. The figures have different widths, so columns of numbers set in Timber Slab will not line up exactly.
Timber Slab is drawn on the same letter structure as 9 other fonts in the library. Compared with Timber Slab, Ledger Slab puts down 41% less ink. Circus Tuscan adds Tuscan spurs and sets 20% wider. Pennant Slab rings each letter with an outline and sets 25% wider.
Measured from the version 0.1.0 font file. Comparisons are with the 314 library fonts measured on October 2, 2026, 40 of them serif fonts.
