About
About Gothic Uncial Open
With an x-height of 77.2% of the cap height, its lowercase stands above the 74.5% median for decorative fonts, taller than 25 of the 35 other decorative fonts. Ascenders on b, d, h, k and l rise 12.2% above the capitals, and descenders on g, j, p, q and y drop 30.6% of the cap height below the baseline, deeper than 32 of the 35 other decorative fonts. It sets wide: an average lowercase letter, spacing included, is 100.1% as wide as the capitals are tall (an average capital, 106.1%), 31.4% more than the median for decorative fonts, so the same words take a longer line. The o is close to a circle, 1.14 times as wide as it is tall, and W is the widest capital, at 1.13 times the width of H. The O stops 1.1% of the cap height short of H and dips 1.1% below the baseline.
The letters stand upright, with no measurable slant. Vertical stems measure 20.2% of the cap height, the heaviest of all 23 decorative fonts. Ink covers 35.3% of each lowercase letter's box (its advance width by the cap height), lighter than 20 of the 35 other decorative fonts. Strokes change thickness with direction: the sides of o and O are 3.3 times as thick as their tops and bottoms.
Its 95 characters include 52 Latin letters, plus 43 figures, punctuation marks and symbols; there are no accented Latin letters beyond A to Z. The word space measures 49.5% of the cap height, and the blank space either side of a lowercase letter takes up 9.8% of its width. The font carries no kerning, so spacing comes from each letter’s own side bearings. The figures have different widths, so columns of numbers set in Gothic Uncial Open will not line up exactly.
Measured from the version 0.3.0 font file. Comparisons are with the 314 library fonts measured on October 2, 2026, 36 of them decorative fonts.
