Ascenders on b, d, h, k and l line up with the capitals (99.2% of their height), and descenders on g, j, p, q and y drop 48.8% of the cap height below the baseline, shallower than 33 of the 53 other script fonts. Its letters are of average width for script fonts: an average lowercase letter, spacing included, is 64% as wide as the capitals are tall (an average capital, 109.8%), within 0.2% of the median. The o is wider than it is tall, 1.65 to 1, and M is the widest capital, at 1.29 times the width of H. The O tops out level with H and stands 0.6% above the baseline.

Ink covers 31.8% of each lowercase letter's box (its advance width by the cap height), darker than 37 of the 53 other script fonts.

Its 148 characters include 105 Latin letters, plus 43 figures, punctuation marks and symbols; 53 of the Latin letters are accented or special forms beyond A to Z. The word space measures 35.8% of the cap height, and lowercase letters reach 32.1% past their own widths into the space of their neighbours. Spacing is adjusted with 51 kerning pairs, more than 39 of the 53 other script fonts. The tightest of them is TA, which closes up by 28.7% of the cap height. The figures have different widths, so columns of numbers set in Scribe Broadpen will not line up exactly.

Scribe Broadpen is drawn on the same letter structure as 16 other fonts in the library. Compared with Scribe Broadpen, Lace Script sets 8% narrower and puts down 32% less ink. Pixel Script rebuilds the letters on a pixel grid and puts down 20% more ink. Noel Copper sets 22% wider and puts down 30% less ink.
