Its x-height is 74% of the cap height, near the 73.3% typical of handwriting fonts in the library, taller than 13 of the 21 other handwriting fonts. Ascenders on b, d, h, k and l stop at 97% of the capital height, and descenders on g, j, p, q and y drop 25.9% of the cap height below the baseline, shallower than 11 of the 21 other handwriting fonts. Its letters are of average width for handwriting fonts: an average lowercase letter, spacing included, is 75.4% as wide as the capitals are tall (an average capital, 85.8%), within 0.8% of the median. The o is close to a circle, 1.01 times as wide as it is tall, and W is the widest capital, at 1.09 times the width of H. The O tops out level with H and stands 2.6% above the baseline.

Ink covers 41.3% of each lowercase letter's box (its advance width by the cap height), darker than 15 of the 21 other handwriting fonts. Each letter carries a drop shadow, kept apart from it by a small gap.

Its 3,966 characters include 3,756 Chinese and 105 Latin letters, plus 105 figures, punctuation marks and symbols; 53 of the Latin letters are accented or special forms beyond A to Z. The word space measures 32.3% of the cap height, and the blank space either side of a lowercase letter takes up 10.9% of its width. Spacing is adjusted with 126 kerning pairs, more than 16 of the 21 other handwriting fonts. The tightest of them is AY, which closes up by 24.7% of the cap height. The figures have different widths, so columns of numbers set in Gag Shadow will not line up exactly.

Gag Shadow is drawn on the same letter structure as 8 other fonts in the library. Compared with Gag Shadow, Sidekick Outline draws the letters as hollow outlines, sets 7% wider and puts down 68% less ink. Caption Comic keeps the letters plain, without the shadow effect and puts down 18% less ink. Zany Comic keeps the letters plain, without the shadow effect and has a 80% x-height.
