Where fancy text works on Discord

Discord shows these letters in nicknames, display names, server and channel names, role names, bios and messages, because they are ordinary Unicode characters rather than a font. Channel names are lowercase only, so capital-only styles change there. Some members read Discord on older phones that lack these characters and see boxes instead, so keep the most important names readable.

Messages also accept Discordโ€™s own Markdown, which always displays: **bold**, *italic*, __underline__, ~~strikethrough~~, `inline code`, ```code blocks```, ||spoilers|| and > quotes. A line starting with #, ## or ### becomes a heading, and -# makes small grey text. Markdown does not work in names, which is where copy and paste styles help.

The result is plain Unicode text, so it pastes anywhere that accepts text: Instagram and TikTok bios, Discord names, X posts, and game tags. Some apps and older phones lack these characters and show empty boxes instead.

Questions

Can I use these fonts in my Discord nickname?
Yes. Nicknames, display names and server names accept these characters. Some servers use bots that block unusual characters in names, so a serverโ€™s own rules may stop you.
How do I make bold or strikethrough text in a Discord message?
Wrap the words in two asterisks for **bold** and two tildes for ~~strikethrough~~. Discord draws them in its own font, so they always display, even where fancy characters would not.
Why do other people see boxes instead of my name?
Their phone or computer has no font with those characters. Bold, italic and script are the most widely supported styles; circled and squared letters are the least.
