How strikethrough text works without formatting

Each letter is followed by a combining mark, a character that draws over the one before it. U+0336, the long stroke overlay, makes the classic strikethrough; the short and wavy strokes and the slash are other overlay marks. Because the line is part of the text itself, it survives copy and paste into apps that have no bold or strikethrough button.

People use crossed-out text for jokes and self-corrections (“I ~~hate~~ love Mondays”), for old prices next to a sale price, and for checked-off lists in bios. Screen readers read the letters and ignore the line, so do not rely on it to carry meaning on its own.

The result is plain Unicode text, so it pastes anywhere that accepts text: Instagram and TikTok bios, Discord names, X posts, and game tags. Some apps and older phones lack these characters and show empty boxes instead.

Questions

How do I cross out text in Discord or Slack?
Type two tildes on each side in Discord (~~text~~) or one tilde in Slack (~text~). Use the generator where there is no such formatting, such as Instagram bios or X posts.
Why does the line look broken between letters?
The mark is drawn over each letter separately, and some fonts leave a small gap between them. The short style has no gaps to show, and a different app or font often closes them.
Can I strike through spaces too?
Spaces stay plain so words keep their spacing and wrap normally. If you want one unbroken line, replace spaces with underscores or dashes before converting.
